In The Square With The Gate To Heaven
Watching people today, I witnessed a rare sight. A man was walking along the sidewalk with his shoulders hunched forward and his eyes empty to the world around him. I immediately recgonized his demeanor as someone who had their heart broken, and I felt a great deal of sympathy for the man.
For whatever reason the man thought to look into the window of an adjacent store. He stopped, and stared at one of the womeon talking in the store. She wore a ring on the correct finger, but it didn't look like a wedding band. It was of an entirely different design. In my mind, the man and the woman were once lovers and by chance had somehow met after years apart. He didn't want to distrub her. No, he must have thought that would have been intrusive.
The two wound up meeting on the same sidewalk, infront of a different store, only minutes later. The looks on their faces was priceless as they tried to guage the other. It was an awkward silence. He mumbled something conversational, being the shy one. She replied. They didn't yell at each other over past grief, nor did they wrap their arms around each other in warm embrace.
She did give him her number on a small piece of paper, however, so they could talk later and catch up. I guess to him, that was the best turn of events he'd had all day. Seeing all this made me feel pretty good today too.
