I've noticed how people can take measure of their own beliefs and then compare them to the acts of someone else. They're worried that they don't believe in something as much as someone who would bite their thumb off, light themselves on fire, or blow up a schoolbus.
You could try to live the life of a pirate on the high seas, but that would be a lot easier if you lived four hundred years ago. You could look for enlightenment by shaving your head and sitting ontop of a pole while muttering gibberish - not as big a stretch if you live in the mountains of Ancient China, but not too easy to pull off if you live in downtown Manhattan. Does this mean that these things are impossible for you to do? No. But consider if it's something you actually need to do.
Ultimately the life we lead is governed by the need and necessity around us. People do things that they want to do, and they also do things that they think need to be done. So the search for spirituality isn't dead, you just have to learn where and how to look for it.
